British artist Julian Opie was born 1958. His works have a high recognition value. Particularly in portraits, he uses a computer program to reduce the facial features with black contour lines to the essential without losing the characteristic features of the person portrayed.

The artist has been one of the most important representatives of English contemporary art for almost three decades.

In his works he deliberately explores the limits of stylization. What they all have in common is their symbolism, clear outlines, lines and monochrome colouring.

The works are stylistically reminiscent of Pop Art. However, Julian Opie is less interested in the themes of mass communication. He is interested in the manifold possibilities of representation that the new media and media technologies offer him. He makes use of the computer, the means of digital image processing, the many possible combinations and uses the most elaborate printing techniques, often also three-dimensionally with the help of collages. He has developed his own universal visual and formal language of the modern world. It is the form that gives the content its meaning. The immediately recognizable, universal language of his art is unique and can be understood worldwide.
From 1979 to 1982 Julian Opie studied at Goldsmiths College, London. His works can be found in the most important public collections worldwide, including the Neues Museum in Nuremberg in 2003, the National Portrait Gallery in London in 2011, the Kunsthalle Helsinki in Finland in 2015, the MoMA in New York, the British Museum in London and the MoMAT in Tokyo. In 2001 he received the Music Week CADS, Best Illustration Award for his album Cover Design for Best of Blur.
